Offa’s Dyke’s house, a 150-mile-long landwork built by Mercia’s King around 785 AD, this area offers spectacular views ranging from river banks and mountain peaks to ‘blue-remembered hills’, peat swamps and wood-lined lakes. Originally inhabited by a prehistoric tribe known as Ordovices and Cornovil, this Midlands region at one time was the heart of the conquering Roman people who built Viroconium, near Shrewsbury, one of the largest Roman cities in Britain with a population of over 6,000. In the Dark Ages, Shropshire is part of the Powys Kingdom and the earliest reference to King Arthur actually indicates that he was a pre-Saxon, Romano-British chief residing in the Oswestry region.

An old hill overlooking the city is said to be the birthplace of Queen Guinevere. Its borders were a source of violent competition and Normandy eventually sought to solve the problem by erecting a series of stunning palaces. One of Britain’s most densely populated districts, the modern Shropshire is divided by Britain’s longest river, Severn, to the relatively low north and east sections and the higher southwest of which is dominated by Shropshire Hill. In the dramatic Severn canyon, the pioneering pioneer head of Abraham Darby perfected the secret of iron smelting in the 18th century with cheap coke and easy to obtain than expensive charcoal. His discovery changed the world and triggered the Industrial Revolution. The canyon is now a World Heritage Site containing the first iron bridge designed and built by Abraham Darby the Third in 1779. Nearby there is a ‘hands-on’ museum that revives innovation and intoxicating discoveries in a celebration of this once- technology.

A real treat for visitors is Blists Hill Victoria Town. The Iron Museum tells the story of smelting up to the 1851 Grand Exhibition where the famous Coalbrookdale Company exhibits his work. The district is built on stone from 11 of the 13 known geological periods, the smallest place in the world to boast so much. In the north, both the Ironbridge Gorge and the Long Mynd valley, the 1,700-foot calcareous limestone that stretches for seven miles, is carved by Ice Glacier ice. This explains why this area has its own ‘lake district’ around the Ellesmere interbre and moss and has a variety of wildlife, including beavers, rare dormouse and some beautiful flora. The five-mile rune known as Wrekin, near Telford, is over 1,300 feet tall and 900 million years old. From its peak, where there is an Iron hill, you can see no less than 17 districts.

Cornovil was the last English tribe to hold this strategic strategic point against the Romans. The first amusement park in England is in Shropshire under the guise of Hawkstone Park, the cliffs, caves and man-made caves. Opened in 1748, it became a popular Victorian sensation like Blackpool of the 20th century. Even claim to have a relationship with King Arthur. The district provides the perfect backdrop for the Severn Valley steam railway, which covers 16 miles from the countryside with seven station stops, and Canal Union Shropshire headed to Llangollen, passing sand hills through a lift bridge and stairs to the Chirk and Pont Cysyllte . Shropshire has many famous sons and daughters including Clive of India, war poet Wilfred Owen, Charles Darwin, Rev. Priest, inventor of ‘spoonerism’, author of A. Housman (‘A Shropshire Lad’) and novelist Mary Webb.

It is said, this is the birthplace of Dick Whittington and Guinevere and there is an interesting possibility that this is the unshakable retreat of King Arthur and the Holy Grail. While the county has significant castles like Ludlow, Eastnor, Cholmondeley and Stokesay, it offers a variety of less real attractions ranging from the internationally renowned Shewsbury Flower Show to the Ludlow Food Festival, as well as various golf courses and fishing destinations can rightly boast that it has some of England’s best parks and public markets. Visiting Shropshire, you will be amazed by the choice of accommodations available, luxury hotels, small guest houses, b & bs, rustic cottages and self-catering apartments.
