As you sit down to dinner you may not think you are part of a great tradition. But the concept of social eating continued into the Middle Ages. The dining room furniture and etiquette, however, were very different then! When you think of a social dining experience, it is usually regarded as a quiet and intimate meeting of friends with delicious food with a bottle of wine. There may be odd controversial comments or rude banter, but generally quite civilized. Events like that from generation to generation are not always like this. In the Middle Ages, this was a busy and bustling celebration of food.
It should be remembered that there is little form of entertainment and that time. The food is how to show off status with this highly symbolic furniture and seating arrangement. The dining room furniture has changed in recent decades, from more formal Victorian wood furnishings to modern minimalist furnishings that reflect the less formal dining experience of today. In North America, there is usually a dining area next to the kitchen, or a smaller area known as a breakfast area in the kitchen area. However, for a more formal meal including for entertaining, a large table with individual seating is still an option.
