Android phone users will soon be distracted by online advertising. Facebook has launched an app called Home. This app, which will only run on Android phones, is designed to precede Google search. This app will promote online advertising on the home screen of someone’s Android phone. Traders today have several advertising options, especially when dealing with social media like Facebook. The problems that traders often encounter with online advertising are cost and ROI. A recent article on Yahoo! Financial noted, “eMarketer research firm estimates U.S. mobile advertising spending to grow 77 percent this year to $ 7.29 billion.
While these numbers are good for the people who sell the ads, do these numbers really benefit the merchants who issued the ads? Past studies almost always lead to the conclusion of “no”. The first issue trader should be addressed when considering buying online advertising, especially when dealing with the new Facebook Home app, is the audience. Seeing an ad every time someone glances at their phone would be annoying. This type of ad can also be white noise. Home can actually make the audience up away. Marvel can hamper effectiveness.

Online advertising (such as an ad form) also depends on repetition. This brings me to my next point. Repetition can be very expensive. Especially since Home is a new program and everyone is expected to jump to the ship quickly. The Neilson Group approves online ads, even with lots and lots of repetitions, not working. Neilson Group has mentioned, “Due to the drastic difference in popularity among sites, only 0.01% of the top websites can generate sufficient ad revenue: in the bigger picture, ads are almost irrelevant to success.” If a merchant blindly buys advertising, without knowing who the audience is, advertising is comparable to screaming in the woods.
No one will see, hear or buy! People who embrace Facebook will probably stop turning away from social networks due to distractions caused by online advertising. Home is a great idea but not too realistic. Imagine having to watch an ad online every time you want to check your text messages, do a search on the Internet or call? The concept of Home can quickly end up like a domain bubble in 1999. It is likely that many merchants will buy online ads at Home. And, maybe this ad will be self-destructive after an annoyed Facebook barrier that cancels their account. Merchants who want to sell their products and build a brand need to be smart when building an audience.
Most people looking for deals do not believe that companies that use online advertising are valid sources. Even The Neilson Group recognizes that online advertising and brand building is not the same thing. Media-monitoring outlets have several reports to support this theory. How does this help or hurt traders? I’m sure Home apps might be a disaster for Facebook and their merchants. The house may be nothing more than a salesman who follows you throughout the day. What happened to a cold call? When was the last time you answered the door for a salesman let alone buy something from them? Facebook Home App is the latest technology that represents this same intrusive practice.
